Our happiness in life is often dependent on the quality of our relationships. Struggles with communication, dysfunctional patterns of relating, and wounds from the past can leave a potentially great relationship in tatters. If you and your partner are struggling, you are recovering from divorce, or are newly entering the dating scene, I’m here to help. With extensive training and experience in couple’s counseling and healing of relationship issues of all kinds, I provide a safe, kind, and insightful approach that will get you back on track to create loving, supportive, and satisfying relationships. In addition to my psychology degrees, I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
I have been in private practice for 20 years, with my specialty focusing on individuals resolving historic traumas and women balancing all of the complications of womanhood in a fast paced, demanding world. In all of my therapeutic work I talk about "traumas". Traumas can be events or messages we internalize about ourselves from the past. Traumas can be brilliantly adaptive: helping us to become incredible, impressive humans. Our traumas can also hold us back in many ways that may be limiting our happiness: the other side of the proverbial coin.
Madeline (Maddi) DeBoer holds her Masters of Social Work and is licensed in both Iowa and Alabama. Maddi specializes in working with clients who struggle with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders such as body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), which include hair-pulling and skin-picking (trichotillomania and excoriation disorder). Maddi has pursued specialized training in the treatment of BFRBs through the TLC Foundation for BFRBs, and is the only provider in Iowa (and one of two in Alabama) who has pursued this advanced training. She also works with those with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), anxiety related to life adjustments and stressors, and specific phobias. Maddi received her B.S. in psychology at the University of Northwestern, St. Paul and her M.A. in social work from the University of Northern Iowa, where she extensively studied trauma-informed and evidenced-based practices. She completed her master’s-level internships at St. Luke’s Hospital and Tanager Place in Cedar Rapids, IA. Since she received her license and degree, Maddi has worked in a variety of clinical settings running partial hospitalization and therapy groups and practicing individual and family therapy. She made the transition to a private group practice a year ago and thrives in helping clients find ways to successfully manage their specific anxieties. Maddi is also a certified yoga teacher.
You deserve a therapist who understands your life in all its complexity. My clients are individuals and couples working through anxiety, depression, grief, identity questions, and strain in their relationships. Many have struggled to find a therapist who can help them feel comfortable exploring more challenging parts of their lives. A lot of my work is with men who learned early that self-reliance was supposed to be enough. I also specialize in working with LGBTQ+ clients and with people exploring nonmonogamy and kink. I want that to be a place of affirmation, not something you have to explain or defend. My approach is grounded in Internal Family Systems. I'm a Certified IFS therapist and have served as a teaching assistant for the IFS Institute. IFS meets the parts of you that feel stuck with curiosity instead of judgment. I also draw on CBT, psychodynamic, and relational work. Before this, I spent a decade in business, government, and nonprofits. That background gives me a feel for the real-world pressures people carry into the room. Reaching out is often the hardest part. Whether you're feeling stuck or just ready to understand yourself better, I'd be glad to talk. I see clients virtually across New York, New Jersey, and Colorado, and I offer a free 15-minute consultation.

I help individuals gain more confidence and self-compassion as we explore the unique challenges they face, past or present.
