Live and Thrive Counseling is my private practice in the community of Carrollton, Georgia. My office is close to the downtown area, but given the covid-19 changes in our daily living practices, my sessions are now fully online. I have experience working with children, adolescents, and adults that are struggling with depression, anxiety, poor body image, life transitions, self esteem issues, and trauma. As a registered yoga teacher (E-RYT 200) and a licensed professional counselor, I enjoy using the cognitive behavioral modality, given its heavy emphasis on mindfulness and cognitive restructuring. In addition to CBT concepts, sessions often include breathing exercises and relaxation strategy practice that the client can eventually learn to practice on his or her own to promote positive self care and healthy coping skills.
Hello, I'm Dr. Rick Van Haveren, a Licensed Psychologist of over 20 years. I have a unique practice where I integrate school/work, health/sport, and life goals. You might experience problems with your relationships. This can lead to difficulties at work, and over time contribute to health problems. Further, a student might struggle in school. The result can be a poor attitude at home, which can cause negative emotions and ineffective coping. The goal of my practice is for you to develop strategies for the best personal life, career, and health. Are you ready to maximize your potential? Visit my website today, www.performancephd.com. I specialize in working with queer and neurodivergent clients, including those with no formal diagnosis, particularly autistic people, individuals with ADHD, and couples with mixed neurotypes. I am interested in exploring embodiment, somatic interventions, expressive arts, and pleasure activism with clients. I work with a variety of needs, such as navigating non-traditional relationship structures, anxiety, depression, self-actualization, low desire, identity development, and dysphoria, and the way grief can interplay with these needs. I facilitate these explorations through a humanistic, feminist, and systems-oriented lens. My area of focus is trauma-informed sex therapy. I hope to support clients as they defang shame and center joy and pleasure in their lives. I have four years of experience working with survivors of sexual trauma and a lifetime of working with queer people; in addition, I am kink-aware, polyamory-positive and -informed, pro-sex work, and organizer-friendly.

I love working with motivated individuals who are striving to reduce anxiety, move past overwhelm, and bring balance back into their lives. School is filled with new experiences and transitions that can kick off or intensify anxiety and stress. It doesn't have to be that way. I can help you get to the root of what's bothering you and teach you tools to move forward with your life and goals. I specialize in working with adults and caregivers affected by cancer or chronic illness. I also work with adult adoptees curious about or pursuing search and reunion.

College is supposed to be “the best years of your life,” right? So why does it sometimes feel like you’re stressed, overwhelmed, questioning everything, and running on caffeine and vibes? I work with college students and young adults who are trying to hold it all together — classes, relationships, family expectations, future plans — while quietly wondering, “Why does this feel so hard?” Anxiety, mood swings, burnout, breakups, identity questions, substance use, grief, big transitions… it’s a lot. And most people try to power through it way longer than they need to. You don’t have to have some perfectly organized explanation for why you’re struggling. If you’re overwhelmed, stuck, unmotivated, or just not feeling like yourself lately, that’s enough. You don’t need a five-point plan before reaching out. Therapy with me is grounded, supportive, and real. We’ll talk like actual humans. We’ll slow things down. We’ll figure out what’s going on underneath the stress without judgment or pressure to “fix” everything overnight. We move at your pace and focus on what feels most important to you. My goal is to help you feel more comfortable in your own head and body — so you can make decisions with clarity instead of panic, respond instead of react, and maybe even sleep a little better. You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through this chapter. Support counts.
I love working with people who think they may have lost the plot. Who wonder if their symptoms may be a natural reaction to our society and our utter disconnection....from everything. I see you, and I get it. I think there is more to a life well-lived than mainstream notions of success. Come explore your life through values exploration and honest self-assessment, whether short or long-term. Welcoming and affirming for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC. I have an eclectic approach, which is a fancy way of saying that I don't rely on any one way of approaching curiosities. But my starting point is always from a place of your strengths, the things you are doing well, and your unique interests/wants/needs. I trend toward elements from Acceptance and Commitment, Positive Psychology, Existentialism, Brief Solution- Focused, Motivational Interviewing, Behavioral Activation, Radical Acceptance, and Mindfulness. I am progressive in my politics, non-religious, and I believe that cursing is a valid form of self-expression. Humor is a big part of how I communicate and I believe it can get us through a lot of things. Despite being a middle-aged white woman who grew up in the south, you will find no bigoted mindset here. I will never pretend to understand the totality of your experience, but I do promise to see you, hear you, and respect you, while being mindful of the systemic, familial, and cultural issues that may be impacting you. I have stopped taking insurance because of all the barriers it creates from its medical model of viewing functionality and need. I know this creates a financial barrier for some, but I believe that until the system changes, its more of a detriment overall. But lets check those out-of-network benefits and see what we can squeeze out of the insurance company for you :)
I collaborate with you to assist you in achieving your personal, therapeutic goals. Along the way, I focus on supporting you on your life journey from a strengths-based perspective. In order to change, you need to acknowledge what you do well, which we can discover together. It is important to notice the positive aspects of life while also addressing the things you wish to change. In my practice, I use evidence-based interventions (CBT, IFS-informed and expressive arts) and trauma-informed mindfulness practices. I have a background in psycho-education (to offer understanding of why we do what we do and skills for meaningful change), somatic (body) awareness, and a certification in spirituality integrated psychotherapy, which I draw on to assist you in living congruently and authentically in the life you are called to live.
