Do you feel stuck? Perhaps you recognize that something in your life isn't working and you've tried to fix things or make changes, but it didn't work and you find yourself feeling exhausted, defeated, confused, helpless, hopeless, or overwhelmed. Or maybe you have no idea where to start. You've landed in the right place because getting unstuck is my specialty. Reaching out for help is a courageous choice. I am honored to provide a safe space for clients to pause, reflect, process, learn, and grow. My goal is to empower clients to live fully and embrace a lifestyle that sustains a sense of well-being. I am licensed in NY, PA, IL, and NH, which allows me to support students year-round who may live in one state and go to school in another, or who plan to move to another state following graduation. Transitions are often a time of increased stress so finding a therapist who can be present *virtually* throughout is important. In addition to our work together in session, I make use of an app that is free to my clients to provide resources between sessions and collect data to create a personalized approach to treatment.

You are really tired. If you’re being honest, your head is spinning & you’re anxious all the time. It’s keeping you from being able to rest, let alone enjoy life. Your thoughts are moving so fast, that it’s hard to stay focused. Now you’re starting to have headaches, racing heart, & tightness in your chest. You’re not sure what to do about it. All you know is that you don’t feel your best & feel that you’ve been letting people down. You feel disappointed in yourself & wonder what is going on with you. Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the pressure you put on yourself or by what everyone else seems to expect from you? College can come with a long list of demands. Do well in classes. Make friends. Join clubs. Keep everyone happy. Figure out your future. When all of this adds up, it can start to feel heavy and confusing. I’m Emily, a therapist with extensive experience working with children, teens, and adults in community mental health clinics, schools, non-profits, and group practices. I help students work through anxiety, depression, self-doubt, identity exploration, social challenges, and the impact of past experiences or trauma. I use approaches like CBT, DBT, and psychodynamic therapy, along with a strengths-based and trauma-informed perspective. What this really means is that we work together to understand what you are experiencing and develop tools that fit you as an individual. My goal is to offer a space where you feel safe, accepted, and supported while you figure things out. You deserve a place where you can be honest, build confidence, and move toward self-acceptance. Whatever you are facing, you belong here. I am here to listen, help you make sense of things, and support you as you work toward the life you want.

As you grow, you strive for more out of life, yet may be unsure how to get to where you may wish to be. I will support you on your journey as we explore together your needs, long-term and short-term perceived goals, and best practices for fulfilling them. I use the therapeutic process to empower my clients so that you come to realize and acknowledge the wealth of resources you have both within and without, building on strengths and gaining confidence to accept the past and create your personal story. I provide individual and group therapy to children, teens, adults, and seniors, with extensive experience working with issues related to anxiety, trauma, depression, life transitions, midlife, parenting, school, caregiver stress, creatively aging, and the second half of life. According to Carl Jung, individuation is the process of self-realization through discovering meaning and purpose in one's life. I provide a safe space for exploration and honoring all aspects of the self-the good, the challenging, that which may be difficult to look at, and everything in between. I use methods such as verbal and non-verbal techniques, art therapy, dreamwork, and imagery as entryways to viewing the unconscious and symbolic content and how these present themselves in conscious life. I am open to the needs of each individual client and invite you to lead me as your guide on your path of growth and evolvement. I hold a Master's degree in Art Therapy and Counseling from Long Island University and certificates in Jungian oriented psychotherapy from the CG Jung Institute of San Francisco, which informs my integrative approach to therapy and supports my commitment to creative and holistic healing.

I come to this work from a place of deep respect for each individual’s story and path. I believe in creating an inclusive, welcoming space where you will feel comfortable exploring both your strengths and your challenges. I have a collaborative approach and value being direct, supportive, responsive to feedback. I have a background in Women’s Studies and literature and creative writing and may incorporate creative and expressive activities such as storytelling and reading other people’s stories as part of our work. I have experience working with a range of issues and populations (see below). I am passionate about women’s and LGBTQI issues and have extensive experience working with gender expansive and transgender individuals along the gender continuum. Fundamentally, I believe the relationship between an individual and his/her/their therapist matters much more than the specific techniques employed. My primary focus early in therapy is developing a relationship where my clients trust me and feel comfortable. I work with individuals in an open and honest dialogue and help individuals increase resiliency and coping skills through identifying their strengths. Primarily I provide individual counseling on a weekly basis. Many clients will be able to work through a particular issue or issues in a brief time, but I am also able to work with clients over a longer span of time.

During your life, you may experience difficult periods of adjustment related to major life changes and/or losses, difficulty in relationships, and/or cultural/social differences in environmental contexts. These periods in your life may lead to or be related to general difficulty coping with life circumstance, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. I provide a holistic approach to working with clients striving to understand them from an intrapsychic, interpersonal, and sociocultural perspective. In working with you, I endeavor to understand how your personality, relationships, and sociocultural identities and environmental contexts interact to affect your psychological functioning and wellbeing. Personal development through counseling/psychotherapy comes from feeling secure in a relational context to explore one's issues. Primary to this process is the establishment of a nurturing therapeutic relationship/alliance. In establishing a safe environment, I will assist you in experiencing more satisfying attitudes, relationships, and feeling more empowered. A major aspect of my work involves understanding how racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity affects one's psychosocial functioning. Understanding your sociocultural identities and how they inform and affect your life assists me in determining what interventions and techniques will be most appropriate for you.
