I have a virtual private practice although I do see clients in person some Saturday mornings. Based in cognitive behavioral therapy, several years ago I also began working with energy and infuse EFT Tapping into sessions. EFT Tapping for College Students: Feel calmer, think clearer, and stay grounded—one tap at a time. College life can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Between deadlines, exams, social pressure, and figuring out your future, stress can build up fast. EFT Tapping (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a simple, effective tool that helps reduce anxiety, ease emotional tension, and bring your mind back to a calmer state—anytime, anywhere. What Is EFT Tapping? EFT is a gentle method that combines light tapping on specific acupressure points with mindful attention to your thoughts and feelings. It’s easy to learn, takes only a few minutes, and can be done discreetly—even in a dorm room, study hall, or before a big exam. How EFT Can Help You Students use tapping to: Reduce stress before exams or presentations Ease feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, or sadness Improve focus and emotional balance Build confidence during demanding times Release tension after a tough day Why It Works Tapping helps calm the body’s stress response, allowing you to shift from “fight-or-flight” mode back into a more relaxed, grounded state. Many students find that even a short session helps them feel lighter, clearer, and more in control. You don’t have to push through stress alone. EFT tapping is a practical, empowering tool you can carry with you through every semester. Whether you’re dealing with academic pressure or navigating emotional ups and downs, tapping can help you reconnect with yourself—and move forward with more ease.
Feeling stuck or unfulfilled in different areas of your life? Would you like support that is professional and confidential? Unlike talking to friends and family, therapy offers a safe space where you can put words to things that are difficult to say, and confront things from your past that seem to interfere with your life in the present. Therapy can lead to deeper self-awareness and insight that can empower you to make the changes you need to live your best life. Everyone has the power to grow and heal with the right conditions and tools. I'm a licensed clinical psychologist with over 15 yrs of experience. I've worked in various settings with people from diverse backgrounds, but college student mental health has been my passion. I've worked in the counseling centers at John Jay, UT Health Science Center, Princeton, and Cornell to name a few. I've also been a certified academic success coach.

Hi, I’m Akeera Peterkin (she/her). My clients describe me as genuine, compassionate, and personable. I see therapy as an allyship—walking alongside you through challenges while making sure you feel heard, respected, and supported. I specialize in working with trauma, identity, and life stressors, holding space for BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, TGNC, students, creatives, and others navigating adversity. My approach is inclusive, affirming, and tailored to your goals, blending evidence-based practices with a culturally sensitive lens. At Amani Nia Therapeutic Services, my goal is to help you feel safe, explore who you are, and build the tools you need to thrive. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I take a trauma-informed, compassionate, and collaborative approach to therapy. I understand that trauma can shape the way you experience yourself, your relationships, and the world—and that healing requires both safety and choice. My role is to help you reconnect with your strengths, restore a sense of control, and create space for growth that feels steady and empowering.I work from a trauma-informed lens, prioritizing safety, trust, empowerment, and emotional regulation in every session. I move at your pace and always respect your autonomy. Together, we’ll explore your experiences gently and intentionally, focusing on how trauma impacts your mind, body, and daily life. In addition to traditional talk therapy, I offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help clients process traumatic memories in a way that reduces emotional distress and shifts long-held beliefs. EMDR can be especially effective for individuals who feel “stuck,” overwhelmed by past events, or disconnected from their sense of self. I also integrate CBT, mindfulness practices, somatic awareness, and strengths-based approaches—always tailoring the work to what feels most supportive for you.Your first session is a calm, low-pressure space to get to know each other and discuss what brings you to therapy. I’ll ask gentle questions about your goals, your history, and what you need to feel safe and supported. We’ll talk about what trauma-informed therapy looks like and, if you’re interested, I’ll explain how EMDR works and whether it may be a good fit—though we won’t begin EMDR on day one. You can expect a collaborative, compassionate conversation where you set the pace. My goal is for you to leave the session feeling heard, understood, and clear about our next steps.

For many, college is the best of times..the newfound freedom to discover who you are and where you’re going in your career and your relationships and the sense of all that’s possible. But, for others, it’s also the worst. Why? Because this is also a time of existential crises. New freedoms bring up so many questions: Is this really the relationship or career I want to pursue? If this is such a great time in my life, why do I feel so anxious, stressed, or depressed? Why can’t I regularly tap into the motivation I want to do all the things I’ve always wanted to do? Imagine how it feels… the waves constantly coming at you. You personally have to navigate these situations, because you’re the only one with all the answers. But it feels scary and shameful that you don’t have the foggiest clue of what you’re doing. And shouldn’t you already know by now?? Not at all! Truth is, college is a much more difficult time than most people acknowledge. But hard times can also be opportunities… for you to discover more fully who you are and how to embrace this ‘not-knowing.’ Our work together will help you learn how to make sense of all these different feelings, and cultivate the creativity needed to make something interesting and new out of all those questions. Instead of being pummeled by the waves, you can actually surf them! Instead of getting pulled in by the undertow, the barrage of self-critical and anxious thoughts that keep you up at night, I’ll help you learn how to approach these without fear and harness them so you can find your answers. Let’s get started! If you’re excited about putting aside the worry and the stress and finding your energy and direction again, call or email me so we can get started. College can be that great time you’d always hoped it would be.
