Finding a comfortable fit between you and your therapist is a very important first step in the process of choosing a qualified licensed psychologist. My approach to therapy involves working in a collaborative, respectful, open, direct, and warm manner. Since our past and present often weave together, exploring the present within the context of the past helps us to understand life patterns which may greatly impact one's relationships, career, and overall physical and mental health. Psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements. There are many different methods I may use to deal with the problems that you hope to address. Behavior therapy is not like a medical doctor visit. Instead, it calls for a very active effort on your part. In order for the therapy to be most successful, you will have to work on things we talk about both during our sessions, in between sessions, and at home. Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks. Since therapy often involves discussing unpleasant aspects of your life, you may experience uncomfortable feelings such as sadness, guilt, anger, frustration, loneliness, and helplessness. On the other hand, psychotherapy has also been shown to have benefits for people who go through it. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings of distress. But there are no guarantees of what you will experience. Our first few sessions will involve an evaluation of your needs. By the end of the evaluation, I will be able to offer you some first impressions regarding our work together, including a treatment plan to follow if you decide to continue with therapy. You should evaluate this information along with your own opinions of whether you feel comfortable working with me. Therapy involves a large commitment of time, money, and energy, so you should be very careful about the therapist you select. If you have questions about my procedures, we should discuss them whenever they arise.

At times, people just want to have a conversation and we put off going to counseling, because honestly we tell ourselves that this other thing is just a little bit more important, a bit more pressing. We forget to invest in ourselves. Life is tough, there is no doubt about that; but why go through it alone. Let me be that person for you to aid you through those tough times or I can simply be that someone that you talk with. Looking for something different in life, but unsure of how to get there? Together, we can open up new possibilities through mutual exploration. Attending to the therapeutic relationship is key in my approach to therapy, and I provide an empathic and safe environment that allows for exploration of experiences that may feel threatening or uncomfortable. My style of therapy draws from a blend of humanistic, constructivist, existential, relational, and psychodynamic approaches. I will work with you to explore how life experiences have contributed to you struggling to make meaning or feeling stuck, which may present itself in a variety of ways, such as depression, relationship issues, anxiety, and so on. I also incorporate a critical approach to psychotherapy that considers you and your experiences through a lens that includes the societal, political, and historical, which allows me to understand you holistically, within your context. Outside of my work, I enjoy spending time with loved ones and my pets, going for hikes and spending time outdoors, collecting and listening to records, and playing my guitar.

I enjoy working with teens and young adults as they step into their power. Whether that means exploring your identity, building relationship skills, increasing self-confidence, setting healthy boundaries, or setting personal goals, I will support you in each step toward the life you envision. Therapy acts as a safe space to explore who you are and develop the tools to help you flourish. Sometimes you may feel that there is no time to slow down, breathe, and decide next steps. You might feel unfulfilled, stuck, or crave inspiration. If you have ever felt powerless due to trauma, stress, anxiety, depression, or struggles with identity and self-doubt, you are not alone, and you are in good hands. Getting to know you and your story is my top priority. I use a blend of therapy modalities, and tailor my approach to your preferences. It is very important to me that you feel comfortable and supported. If that means moving slowly, taking breaks, or using nontraditional methods (like journaling, art, music, or games), I’m here for you. Reach out today!

Has someone gone quiet when you mentioned how your person died, or said "at least they're at peace now"? Grief after a suicide or overdose loss carries an isolation most people never have to explain. If that's you, or you're facing any sudden death, painful breakup, ambiguous loss, or traumatic transition, you don't have to carry it alone. As founder of Vargas Counseling and Consulting and a nationally-recognized grief therapist, DU Graduate School of Social Work professor, and Director of Grief Outreach Programs, I've worked with thousands of bereaved individuals and trained dozens of clinicians and peer helpers in complex loss. I provide highly specialized, trauma-informed grief counseling rooted in Narrative Therapy and relational care. We won't try to "fix" your pain or rush your timeline. Instead, I leverage my deep expertise to help you safely externalize the weight of your loss, process emotional trauma, and gently rebuild meaning, clarity, and hope for your future. You do not have to carry this heavy isolation alone. Healing from painful loss starts by taking one small step. I invite you to reach out today to schedule a free 15-minute consultation call. Let’s connect, see if we are a good match, and begin navigating this path together. Your story, your history, and your grief matter deeply here.
Helsel Counseling
My clients are young women who are emotionally intelligent and highly self-aware; however, they still struggle with feelings of unworthiness and feel alone as they present to the world as "high-functioning." I help my clients make sense of the mismatch between what they “know” and what they feel and to move from surviving to thriving. My therapeutic style focuses on cultivating self-compassion and curiosity to offset the judgment we often use when relating to ourselves. A client of mine will hear me say, “All behavior makes sense, in context.” My aim is to be curious about your context to help you to see just how much you and your present experience makes sense.

It was at PSU that I decided that I wanted to help others. After graduating from the Human Development and Family Studies program, I decided to further my education by attending graduate school at Loyola University Maryland. There I obtained my Master's in Counseling Psychology and completed additional coursework so that I could eventually become a Licensed Professional Counselor. Over the last 16 years I have had the pleasure of working with children, teens, young adults and adults. I have experience working with college students and understand the unique pressures that PhD candidates face. I strive to provide an environment that clients feel safe, supported, and validated. In turn, this will lead to a positive therapeutic relationship in which self-reflection and processing can take place. My goal is for you to recognize your strengths uncover your hidden potential. I hope to help you with whatever obstacles or challenges you may be facing. Please view my website for more information on my therapeutic approach, a look at my office, and insurances I accept.

I love working with children and teens! Connecting to a child's world is so interesting. I thoroughly enjoy engaging with their creativity and curiosity. I understand children are sensitive to the relationships in their life. Times of stress can take a toll on all relationships, the one with ourselves, with our family members, and often times our children. I work to be present, offer a nonjudgmental, and understanding atmosphere. Making sense of life's challenges and choices can be complicated. Let me help your child and family navigate through challenges to reclaim your peace and gain a new sense of freedom. My years of experience in child behavioral health have been spent in various setting including community, outpatient clinics, and school-based. I apply evidence based treatments to assist my client in discovering their own potential. I am an affirming therapist who works with all members of the LGBTQ community.

Something feels off, and you can't quite name it. You're doing everything you were supposed to do, but the life you're living doesn't feel fully like yours. You look around and it seems like everyone else found their footing, their person, their purpose. And quietly, you've started to wonder: Why not me? What am I missing? The gap between where you are and where you thought you'd be by now can feel like failure, even when, logically, you know it isn't. You're measuring yourself against a timeline you didn't write, comparing your insides to everyone else's outsides, and coming up short every time. The loneliness isn't just about being single or not having the career you wanted. It's the disconnection from yourself, from knowing who you are and what you actually want, separate from what you were always told to want. You don't need to have it all figured out. But you do deserve to feel at home in your own life, curious about where you're going rather than ashamed of where you are. You deserve to trust yourself again. I work with women who are navigating that in-between, exploring who they are, longing for real connection, and untangling the anxiety that comes with feeling behind. Together, we'll loosen the grip of comparison, get clear on what you actually value, and help you build a life that feels genuinely yours, not a performance of what it was supposed to look like. I offer online therapy in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. If this sounds like you, please reach out to schedule a free 15 minute consultation!
