Therapists for college students near Philadelphia, PA
Shara Harad-Oaks
Do emotions take over and exhaust you? Have people marveled at how resilient you are or mentioned your sensitivity as a liability? Maybe you sometimes wonder if you’re the only one who is seeing the hurt and pain all around. It’s likely you have figured out how to adapt to what the world wants you to be. You present the part of yourself that is widely accepted by your community and our social systems, but what about the rest of YOU? We always hear that college is the best days of our lives, but it is also a time a self discovery. That discovery process can be painful, and I can help. I guide young adults to connect to their inherent worth, power, and self-compassion. I work collaboratively with clients and draw from an expansive toolbox including body-oriented practices, talk therapy, and expressive arts. I am well suited to work with clients who are interested in mindfulness meditation and other body-based exercises to be the center of their therapeutic experience. My scope of practice includes anxiety, grief, burn-out, persistent depression, relational stressors, survivors of sexual trauma, and those navigating life as an artist. I align with clients whose identities and values defy society's conventional norms. My practice is trauma-informed, and I am dedicated to an anti-oppression, anti-racist, body positive, LGBTQIA+ affirming and equitable lens.

Whether you are struggling with work-life balance, relationships, or life transitions, I offer new ways of thinking and a personalized treatment plan that empowers you to live your most meaningful life. I also have significant experience treating college students, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and people of color. I am a psychiatrist practicing in Philadelphia with virtual appointments available for patients in PA, NJ, and NY. In addition to prescribing medications, I incorporate multiple psychotherapy modalities to best suit your needs. I am also happy to collaborate with your existing therapist if your need at this time is primarily medication management. I graduated from Harvard College with High Honors in the Comparative Study of Religion and received my MD from Thomas Jefferson University with a certificate in clinical translational research. I completed my Adult Psychiatry residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC. I also received additional psychotherapy training at NY Psychoanalytic Society & Institute. Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates is a network of about 25 Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners and Psychotherapists who are academically oriented and practice evidence-based care. We treat anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and ADHD. We additionally provide neuropsychological assessments for accommodations. Services include Psychiatric Evaluations, Medication Management and Psychotherapy. Patients can generally be seen within 2-3 weeks. We do not have admitting privileges at local hospitals, and therefore, if a patient is high risk for self-harm, is acutely suicidal or needing crisis intervention, has a history of inpatient psychiatric admissions, suicide attempts, or psychosis, we may recommend providers with additional emergency resources outside of our practice.

Going to college may feel like it is supposed to be one of the most exciting times in your life. Leaving home, starting an independent life and creating connections with people from all over the world sounds great, right? But, it is also one of the more challenging times in life from a developmental stance. Family relations feel different, making friends can be challenging in a larger setting, academics are rigorous and there is a struggle to know who you 'really are.' On top of that, differences between you and others on identity dimensions can have you re-examining where you fit into the larger world around you. I am here to help guide you through this time so that you can work through unpleasant feelings while simultaneously feeling more confident in the person you are becoming and wish to be.

I mostly work with people in their 20s and 30s who experience depression and anxiety or need help navigating substance use, self-esteem, body image, identity development, sexuality, and interpersonal relationships. Life is full of highs and lows, and it is through these experiences and emotions that we grow. I would love the opportunity to help you work through the lows and discover a stronger and healed version of yourself. I have experience working in the collegiate counseling setting, helping students navigate anxiety, depression, adjustment, and substance use issues. I also have experience creating a safe space and working with LGBTQIA+ students with identity development, body image issues, and interpersonal relationships.

IOP Sanare Today is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that provides group treatment for individuals in crisis or who are struggling with maintaining emotional stability. We offer both mental health and substance use groups. Groups are held 4 days a week to provide more support and direction than traditional outpatient care. IOP groups are provided separately for adolescents and adults. The IOP is an effective step down transition for individuals coming out of a hospital or as a preventive measure to inpatient treatment. Each group session runs for 2 ¼ hours. Family support groups are scheduled weekly or every other week. Sanare Today offers day and evening programs in several different office locations. Life Coaching Sanare Today also offers life coaching. Sanare Today Life Coaching provides guidance for day to day living as well as therapeutic technique implementation. It involves working with adolescents and adults struggling to thrive at their ideal capacity. The core process involves mainly individual, but at times, group sessions. The coaching plan is determined through the collaboration of the client, the coach and the referring provider (if applicable). Each session runs for a total of 60 minutes, unless predetermined otherwise. Sanare Today Life Coaching is designed for individuals who would benefit from more experiential services instead of, or in addition to, traditional mental health or substance use treatment. Life coaching is an effective step down from the intensive outpatient program and an effective addition to individual, one-on-one treatment.

WARNING: HIGHLY INTERACTIVE THERAPIST! I work with clients 13+ from a wide range of genders and backgrounds. Most of my clients are dealing with some combination of anxiety, depression, relationship stress, or questions about sexuality and gender. Many are coming out of their first big break up or first major loss. I have a particular focus in “men’s” issues, relationships and couples work, and on addressing topics we were never taught to explore — namely sexuality and grief. Some of my clients are deeply religious others are atheists. Some have never dated others are active BDSMers. My style is highly interactive. We’ll work to address faulty beliefs and longstanding BS. Together, we can talk about anything from anxiety to compulsive porn use, from kink to grief. I have a particular focus in “men’s” issues, couples counseling, and grief. I won’t promise you’ll “find happiness.” That would be like trying to sell you keys to your own car. All I promise is to be your teammate. If what you seek is a combination of empathy and strength, a nonjudgmental space, an emphasis on connection over analysis, and a confidant who will not waver then I invite you to book a consultation below.

Women Balance
You're not going crazy! The stress of our early 20's and college years is woefully underestimated. It is often the time when we will experience our first serious bout of depression, or paralyzing anxiety. You may have managed to keep some of this at bay through high school, but now you feel like you've hit a wall - just when you were "supposed to be" independent. I specialize in empowering young women to navigate this period of transition with clarity, insight, and choice. It is often said that crisis creates opportunity. Now is your opportunity. Let's talk!
